Loft Apartment
The project was to combine two apartments in Marina City to make a larger unit for a sophisticated couple, who wanted “loft-living” but loved Marina City.
The solution was to remove the central dividing wall; the many impediments to this solution, including pluming and electrical continuities, led to a series of layers and special shapes. The entry was on one side, the kitchen expanded on the other. Original building details were kept and highlighted.
In the original design, one moved from the dark entry to exterior light; the new design kept that, but added another layer of richness in between.
Corners were opened up where possible, to give a feeling of expansion to the space. The eye always has somewhere more to see.
View of the project from above. The closets were expanded at the entry, a small table/storage area nearby. A small island was placed in the kitchen, with a utility storage area behind by the back entry.
